A SOM/ARSOM Hierarchy for the Description of Dynamic Scenes

A neural architecture is presented, aimed to describe the dynamic evolution of complex structures inside a video sequence. The proposed system is arranged as a tree of self-organizing maps. Leaf nodes are implemented by ARSOM networks as a way to code dynamic inputs, while classical SOM's are used to implement the upper levels of the hierarchy. Depending on the application domain, inputs are made by suitable low level features extracted frame by frame of the sequence. Theoretical foundations of the architecture are reported along with a detailed outline of its structure, and encouraging experimental results.

This panel reports some considerations about the definition of vision-models. The panellists are scientists working on vision problems from different perspectives. The concept of model in vision seems to remain still open. In fact, it is dynamic, and context dependent. There exists the need for a better exchange of information, among biologists, engineers, physicists, and psychologists in order to improve our knowledge.

We present a supervised method, developed for industrial inspections by artificial vision, to obtain an adapted combination of descriptive features and a lighting device. This method must be implemented under real-time constraints and therefore a minimal number of features must be selected. The method is based on the assessment of the discrimination power of many descriptive features. This paper presents the UJI Industrial Robotics Telelaboratory, which lets Ph.D. and Master’s degree students perform robotics and computer vision tele-experiments. By using this system, students are able to program experiments remotely via the Web, in order to combine the use of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to provide real-time vision processing, a conveyor belt, and a Motoman industrial manipulator. M-VIF: A machine-vision based on information fusion

The authors describe a new architecture for machine vision, which is based on information fusion approach. Its general design has been developed by using a formal computation model that integrates three main ingredients of the visual computation: the data, the models, and the algorithms. The hardware design and the software environment of M-VIF are also given. The simulation of M-VIF is under development on the HERMIA-machine.
